The legendary Green Monster at Boston’s Fenway Park has been dwarfed this week by a giant ski and snowboard ramp that virtually overtakes the entire stadium.
The 140-foot high ramp is part of Big Air at Fenway US Grand Prix airing on NBC Sports Thursday and Friday Feb 11 and 12. Riders will descend the ramp at a 38 degree angle for about 52 feet before launching into the air, landing them eventually somewhere near home plate.
Crowds at the event are expected to reach 20,000, marking a milestone in the iconic park’s 104-year history.
“This is one of the biggest things we’ve done, and it’s completely new,” Red Sox director of special projects Fred Olsen told Fox Sports. “That’s part of what we’re shooting for — a new atmosphere for us to present to, hopefully, a new demographic.
On Wednesday, competitors practiced soaring off the ramp, posting many photos and videos to social media including the following first-person point-of-view shot by Hawaiian Lyon Farrell.
Some of the riders are the same who recently competed in the Winter X Games in Aspen.
