It’s almost time for Halloween, which in addition to eating lots of candy and dressing up in costumes involves the time-honored tradition of hucking pumpkins with giant sling shots.
Now a killer whale up in British Columbia is getting into the action, only instead of a pumpkin it flung a harbor seal about 80 feet into the air. The extraordinary site was captured by drone from a vessel owned by Eagle Wing Whale Watching Tours.
A group of transient orca whales, which are different then Southern Resident killer whales because they feed on marine mammals, were circling a school of anchovies when one of the whales went after a harbor seal. Known for playing with their food, this orca created a whipping action which punted the harbor seal high into the air like a football player.
Watch transient orca 'T69C' punt a harbour seal 80 feet into the air near Victoria, BC! SHARE if you love these magnificent creatures (or if you feel sorry for the poor seal)...*All aerial images were filmed from a safe distance under the guidance of Transport Canada and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans.
