In a rarity for comedian Eddie Izzard, the 54-year-old was a man of few words. And rightly so. The British comic had just completed a double marathon, not to mention 25 other marathons over the past 27 days when a camera filmed the finishing moments.
“That was very, very tough,” Izzard says, still catching his breath.
Izzard completed the feat in South Africa as part of a fundraising effort for Sport Relief, one of the Britain’s largest charities. Donations supporting Izzard generated £1.35m, adding to the 2016 Sport Relief total of £56,984,007.
Izzard had attempted a similar feat in 2012 but had to call it early because of difficulties.
“It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” said Izzard. “Thank you to everyone who has donated [and] don’t do this at home.”
Izzard chose to complete 27 marathons in South Africa representing the 27 years that Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
